Like Father, Like Son

Chapter 1

"Oh, come on, Bella, it will be fun, I promise," Jessica Stanley said, holding a little black dress out for me. Angela Weber nodded firmly.

"I don't feel like going out," I grumbled, shaking my head.

Jessica and Angela had been my best friends since I moved to Forks two years ago. I was now a high school graduate, about to start my freshman year at the University of Washington (U of W) in Seattle, and I couldn't wait to leave high school behind.

"Jacob was an ass, forget about him."

How I could forget the fact that my boyfriend of almost two years had decided not to wait for me and decided to sleep with someone else? How was I supposed to get over something like that?

"Any guy that doesn't respect you and willing to wait for you to be ready, then he's not worth it," Angela said.

Then again, I couldn't blame Jacob for sleeping with Leah. They both lived at La Push, the local reservation outside of Forks, where as I lived with my divorced father, who was police chief of Forks. Plus Leah was beautiful, with her long jet black hair, deep dark eyes, and russet colored skin.

I was pale, with washed out mahogany brown hair and boring brown eyes, and I know I dressed more tomboyish, but that was just me, I wasn't going to change for some guy. Plus I was accident prone, I spent more time in the hospital than doctors or nurses, what guy wanted to put up with someone who fell down a lot?

The image of seeing them naked together, him making noises that he should have been making with me, would be forever burned in my brain. I should have listened to Billy, Jacob's father, when he told me not to go in the house.

Finally I agreed to go to this stupid dance club, just to shut them up. Back in Phoenix, where I'd grown up, dance clubs were for only those 21 and over, but in Washington State they had the over 18 ones, but of course you couldn't buy alcohol until you were 21, unless you knew someone.

I'd only drank alcohol once, and it had been gross. I'd snuck one of my dad's beers once, and I never did that again, beer was so nasty and gross.

No sooner had we gotten to the club, conveniently named Champs, when Angela spotted her boyfriend Eric Yorkie, and Jessica was over cozying up to Mike Newton. I shook my head and gulped down my Sprite. Some things never change.

I was sitting at a table working my way through another Sprite when I heard a cough behind me.

"Is this seat taken?" a soft voice asked. I looked up and almost choked on my soda. He was without a doubt the most handsome man I'd ever laid eyes on. He had soft blonde hair almost white, bright ice blue eyes, and a smile that could melt the coldest heart.

"Uh, no, go ahead," I mumbled.

"I've never seen you here before, are you new in town?"

"Yeah, my friends and I are going to school up here, we're from Forks."

"Ah, I've been there, but I prefer bigger towns. I live here in Seattle."

"What do you do for a living?"

"I'm a doctor. You?"

"I'm a college student, haven't really thought about what I want to be yet. My father is the Police Chief of Forks."

"How old are you?"

"I'll be 19 in a few weeks."

"Ah, so young and naive."

"How old are you then?"

"Old enough to be your father." I choked on my soda.

"Seriously? You look so young."

"I'm afraid so, my dear. I'm 38. My oldest son is 21, my middle son is 19, and my daughter is 18."

"You have kids? Where's your wife?"

"She passed away 6 years ago from leukemia, and we adopted all our children."

"I'm sorry, I had no idea."

"No, I'm sorry, where are my manners? I'm Carlisle."

"Bella."

"Is it short for Isabella?"

"Yes, how did you know?"

"Lucky guess."

We danced, letting the music surround us. He still hadn't told me his last name, but it didn't matter, I probably wouldn't see him again after tonight. After all, what would a 38 year old widowed doctor with three grown children want with a girl young enough to be his daughter anyway? If we had one night, I wanted to make the most of it.

"Do you want to get out of here?" he asked, whispering in my ear.

I nodded, scanning the crowd for my friends. I decided to text them instead, telling them I would see them in the morning.
We ended up at my dorm. I knew Jessica and Angela probably wouldn't be home right away, if they even came home tonight, so that was the safest place. I wasn't brave enough to ask him to take me to his house.
