Chapter 17: CPOV

“Mr. Grey- Mrs. Grey on the phone for you.”

That’s odd. Ana never calls me at work. We usually just text or e-mail throughout the day.

“Hello? Ana?”

“Christian.”

“Hi, baby, what’s wrong? Are you okay? Is Teddy?”

“Yeah, we’re okay. Well, I think Teddy’s sick.”

“How sick? Does he have a temperature?”

“I think so. Do you think you could come home at lunch?”

I ran a hand through my hair nervously. Ana never asked me to leave work in the middle of the day.

“Of course. Are you home with him now?”

“No, I’m on my way. Gail called and said he was really congested and coughing.”

“Poor baby. I’ll get there as soon as I can, but Ana? I want you to call my mom when you get there, okay?”

“Okay, Christian.”

“He’ll be okay, Ana.”

“Yeah. He’s just never been sick before! And it has to be bad for Gail to call me at work!”

“She just knows you’d want to be there with him. He’s okay.”

“Okay. See you later, Christian.”

“Be home soon, Ana.”

Shit. I had a ton of stuff to do today.

“Lisa?” I hit the call button.

“Yes, Mr. Grey?”

“Cancel my meetings for the rest of the day. I’m going home.”

I called my mom from the car.

“Christian?”

“Yeah, Mom, it’s me.”

“Hi, sweetie.”

“Did Ana call you?”

“Yes, she said the baby wasn’t feeling well.”

“Yeah. What should we do?”

“Take his temperature when you get home. Use the aspirator bulb to clear out his nose, and give him a baby dosage of children’s decongestant. I think you’ll need to call the pediatrician for the exact amount.”

“Okay, Mom, thanks.”

“Listen, Christian, he’ll be perfectly fine. The only thing I want you to really listen for is his cough- it should be loose, not dry and wheezy.”

“And if it’s dry and wheezy?”

“If it’s dry and wheezy, call me back.”

“Okay.”

“Call if you need anything, Christian.”

“Thanks, mom, bye.”

I turned into our driveway and punched the gate code. Ana’s car was already in the garage. I walked into the house to find Gail in the kitchen and Ana pacing the floor rocking a crying baby in her arms.

“Oh, Christian, good!”

“Come here, son.”

I took the baby from her arms and looked down at Teddy. He was driveling and crying. “Poor thing.” I tried to wipe some of the gunk from his face.

“Ana, I spoke to my mom. Did you take his temperature? Clear his nose?”

“Yes, I tried, but he’s really congested. I called the doctor and found out how much medicine to give him.”

“That’s good. Maybe that’ll knock him out and let him sleep.” I continued rocking Teddy side-to-side.

I propped Teddy up against my shoulder, hoping it would help clear his passageways. He gave a cough. Shit. A dry, wheezy cough.

Ana saw my face tense. “What’s wrong?”

“No, nothing. I’m just going to call my mom back and give her an update.” I passed Teddy back to Ana.

“Hello?”

“Hi, Mom.”

“How’s Teddy?”

“He’s got a dry cough.”

“Does it sound like a little bark?”

“Yes, kind of.”

“Okay, it sounds like croup. There are some things you can do.”

“Croup? Is he going to be okay?”

“Yes, it’s pretty common with babies. It’s that dry, barking cough. It’s worst at night. I want you to set up a vaporizer in his room. Moist air will help him. You can also bring him into a steamy bathroom.”

“Okay, vaporizer, steamy bathroom.”

“Yes, and then we’ll see how he does tonight, and possibly look into some medicine.”

“Thanks again, Mom.”

“No problem, son.”

I went up to the nursery to get the vaporizer ready. We had bought it with the rest of the baby gear- the saleswoman was insistent- but it has sat in the closet the past nine months. Now I felt like going back and giving that saleswoman a big bonus.

I came back down and turned on the shower in the downstairs bathroom.

I heard Teddy cough again and went back in the kitchen.

“What did your mom say?” Ana looked tired and worried, rocking the baby in her arms.

“She thinks he has croup. We’re going to take him into a steamy bathroom, and then try to let him nap with the vaporizer in his room.”

“Is he okay? Can he breathe? Oh my god.”

“Ana, I’m not going to let anything happen to him. He’s going to be okay.” I cradled my family, trying to radiate a calm energy, but inside I was scared shitless.

We brought Teddy into the bathroom to breathe in the steamy air. I wasn’t really seeing any immediate affect, but he wasn’t crying anymore.

“He’s probably exhausted.” Ana rested her head on Teddy’s.

“Let’s see if he’ll sleep.”

We went to Teddy’s room where the vaporizer was on full blast and laid him in his crib.

He gave a few coughs, but we saw that he was going to succumb to sleep. I grabbed the baby monitor on our way out, and we went back to the family room.

I laid sideways on the couch, my neck on the armrest, my legs out in front of me. Ana came and sprawled herself out on top of me, her front pressed against mine.

I stroked her hair, and we both watched each time the baby monitor lit up and sounded one of our son’s little barks.

I felt Ana’s body tense as she winced with each cough. The baby wheezed as he slept, and I felt my wife trembling on my chest.

“Ana.” I stroked circles around her back and moved my hand to her cheek, where I felt a smattering of wet tears. “Oh, Ana, no, don’t cry!” I lifted her further up my chest so that I could look at her.

“Don’t, baby. He’s going to be fine.” I tucked back her hair.

“Christian, my baby can’t breathe! He sounds like he’s in pain!”

“I think it sounds worse than it is. The vaporizer’s gonna help.”

The baby monitor sounded again with Teddy’s coughing, and Ana crumbled, streaming more tears.

“Baby, no. Not my strong Ana.” I spoke softly into her hair.

“I’m not strong when it comes to my baby being sick. Not when it comes to my family,” she spoke through her sniffles.

“I know, me either, baby.” It was all I could do to hold it together for all of us. Somebody had to, but my heart was hurting for my son.

“But we can be strong together. For him,” I told her.

Ana sniffed and nodded into my chest.

“Come, let’s go get something to eat.”

“I can’t eat.” Ana shook her head.

“Ana, I would like you to eat. You need your energy. We might have a long night ahead of us with a sick baby.”

We went into the kitchen where Gail had lunch ready for us and ate quietly, never taking our eyes off the baby monitor.

That night was rough. Ana and I would pass each other, zombies making our way down the hall every few hours from our room to the nursery, from the nursery to our room. We were both distraught over Teddy’s wheezing. Thankfully, a few days later, Teddy was all cleared up, and consequentially, all three of us were finally able to breathe again.
