Chapter 2 of 2
Posted: September 16, 2014

...

When Wrath’s parents had been murdered, he held his baby sister in his arms. Wreign was asleep when his father had rushed Wrath into the small closet and placed the baby in his arms. “Do not make a sound, save yourself and your sister. One day you will be King, you must protect yourself so that you may lead our race one day. I love you, son.”

It had all happened so fast. Wrath sat perfectly still, wrapping the blanket around the baby’s ears so that she would not wake up from the yells. Tears had streamed down his face as he sat and stared at his beloved parents through the tiny slat in the door. They were both dead. Murdered. He vowed to never allow that to happen to his family again.

Wrath and Wreign had been raised by friends of their parents. As Wrath grew older, he began to train and learn the ways of the Brotherhood. When he turned eighteen, he left the house and traveled to continue his training in a proper camp.

Wreign, or Raney, as he called her, was four years younger then him. She worshiped the ground that he walked on and was a constant shadow to him. Leaving her had been hard, but he knew in his heart that they would be together again. She was safe and with good people. She was becoming quite a beauty who looked exactly like their mother. He only wished that Raney had known their Mamam….but he had fulfilled his promise to keep her safe. It was now time for him to learn to fight so that he could continue to protect her for the rest of their days.

They had written many letters to one another. Raney was doing well in school, and had many young men calling on her. She refused them all, always saying that she would not be paired without her brother’s blessing. Training could take years, and the young suitors gradually moved on to other girls. None of them had held her interest, anyways.

After Wrath had gone through his transition and moved into Darius’s home in Caldwell, he had sent for her. Darius had doted on Wreign as if she were his own daughter, spoiling her and showing her the grandness of his life. She was by this time a beautiful woman and he clothed her in only the finest of things.

Raney appreciated and loved Darius, but she was most happy to just be with her brother once again. It was as if no time had passed at all. They were so very close and Wrath remained her idol.

Wrath remembered the night that she had gone through her own transition. Seeing his beloved sister in pain and knowing that he could do nothing but sit with her and wait was torture. Darius had the son of a fine family there as well, as he hoped that the two would make a good pairing together.

Raney had come through transition and drank from the boy, but she had no interest in him other than the nourishment that he provided. Her long, wavy, black hair, clear green eyes and petite feminine body had definitely interested the boy, however. Darius had to hold Wrath back while Raney drank from him as they watched the boy hold and caress her body, obviously hoping for more to happen between the two.

He knew that one day, she most likely would meet her mate. And he knew that perhaps one day, it would even happen for him, as well. For now, though, he was content to keep his sister with him. Raney felt the same, and they had lived together like that with Darius for many years.

All of that changed three years ago. So many changes were occurring…Darius’s death, the Brotherhood coming together under one roof, the increased fighting with the Lessers. Not all of it was bad, though. He had found Beth and they had married. Some of the other Brothers had mates as well. And Raney had fallen in love with Tohrment, his closest friend within the Brotherhood.

It had taken some time for Wrath to get used to the idea that Tohr and his sister were “together”. There had not been any talk of marriage, but Wrath was sure that it would happen. Falling in love with Beth had made him realize how much he wanted that same thing for his sister. He trusted Tohr with his life, and he would happily stand by one day at their wedding.

That’s why he couldn’t understand what Raney had done. One night, she simply left the house, and never came back. Tohr was frantic, Wrath assumed they had fought, and for two days there was no word from her. Worried that she had been kidnapped by the Lessers or somehow injured and unable to get in touch with had them made the whole house on edge.

And then, she called Wrath. She was fine…just needed some time away…she was safe…no, she would not tell him where she was…she asked him to tell Tohr that she was sorry. He had never seen his brother so devastated. After a few days, the sadness turned into anger and Tohr fought with even more strength and rage. He wouldn’t talk about Raney, and she never called him.

For the past three years, their only contact had been via phone or Skype. She and Wrath spoke with one another at least once per week, and she had met Beth and the other shellans during those conversations. Tohr always left the room if he was there when she called. He could be found down in the gym, running or lifting weights until his body collapsed from fatigue.
But she had agreed to come to his son’s birthday party. She was so happy for Wrath and Beth, and she couldn’t wait to hold her nephew in her arms. He just had to convince her to stay.

~~Wreign~~

Enough time had passed, and she hoped that the Brothers would welcome her back. She knew that seeing Tohr would be the hardest, but she prayed that he would at least listen to her. She knew that he had not met anyone else, and the same was true for her.

The transformation in her brother over the past three years was nothing short of a miracle. When he fell in love with Beth, his heart had finally softened. Always on guard, always expecting the worst, always thinking he had to be on the defensive…that is how Wrath had been for her whole life.

She didn't remember their parents, but he did. Losing them that day had forever scarred him. Beth, and now their son, they had brought Wrath back to life. She loved her brother, but she really liked the man that she saw that he was now.

Three years had been too long. Even though she felt that her reasons were very valid, she missed everyone in Caldwell. There was such a large population there of their race. And even though she did not miss the uppity glymera families, she did miss the feeling of being somewhere that she belonged. She missed Tohr even more.

Her love for him was just as strong today as it ever was. He was her everything. She felt misplaced without him near. Breaking his heart had been the hardest thing to do, even if it was for his own safety. She had no idea if he would even speak to her, but she knew that she had to at least explain it to him…even if it would only answer his questions and lead him to someone else’s arms, she had to tell him.

Packing her things was a relatively quick task. Most of her clothing here in Louisiana would not transfer to her life in New York, so the vast majority was donated. These past years had been the first time that not only had she been living alone, but she had been without any doggen, as well. Not that it was all that difficult, she wasn’t very needy in that way. It had actually been kind of fun to do such things like laundry and making her own bed.

Thinking of these tasks made her think of Fritz. Sweet, reliable, grandfatherly Fritz. He had been Darius’ doggen for…forever, and now he was with Wrath and the Brothers. Fritz always made her smile, and she loved to sneak hugs to the man every now and then just to see him get all flustered. Settling back into her seat on the plane, she smiled at the thought of seeing him at the airport.

~~Wrath~~

“Tohr, I need to speak with you, my Brother”, Wrath said as he stood by the doors to the office. Tohr had been planning on going down to his office to work on some of the recent evaluations of the Trainees. But, when the King called, you didn’t say no, even if he was your best friend.

“I know about her coming back, if this is what this is about…”,  Tohr said as he closed the doors. He knew that this conversation was coming. He knew that Wrath was worried about him and his reaction to Raney’s arrival at the mansion. Hell, even he really didn't know what his reaction would be.

“Listen, I know this is tough. I know whatever went down between the two of you was bad, but…”.

“Wrath, I love you , man, but “bad” doesn't begin to cover it. I know she’s your sister, I know you’re going to side with her, I wouldn’t expect any less from you. Just know, though, I really don’t know why she left. As far as I knew, things were good. Damn, they were great! I was even thinking of asking her to marry me, Wrath.”

Wrath sighed as he sat down. “I’m so sorry, Tohr. I don’t know what to say. She hasn’t told me anything but that she’s sorry. I was surprised as hell when she said yes to come to the baby’s party.”

“Speaking of that, yes, I will be there,” Tohr said. “But, don’t expect me to stay long. If I make a quick exit, don’t let it interfere with the party, man, OK? This is a night to celebrate, no matter what else happens.”

“Yeah, OK. Just don’t go into it expecting the worst, OK? She’s getting here the night before…maybe you two will have a chance to talk beforehand. Maybe work things out? I don’t begin to understand my sister, Tohr, but I’ve got a feeling that she cares for you.”

“Well, I’m not holding my breath. But, all right…I’ll try to be "open minded",” he answered with air quotes. “Now, we’re done here? I’ve got some files to go over and then we can discuss the Trainees later, my man.”

“OK, sounds good. I’ll see you later.”

As Tohr walked down the hall towards his office, he ran into V. The two did their usual fist pump, but instead of a laugh, V suddenly stilled, his eyes looking past Tohr.

“V? My man? You OK?”, asked Tohr.

V slowly shook his head, clearing his mind. “I just had a vision of you, Tohr, but I don’t know what the hell it means.”

“Me? Was it bad? Or do I not want to know?”

“You were holding roses, dude. That’s all I saw, you standing and holding a bunch of roses…”.

“Roses? Damn, what have you been drinking?”, laughed Tohr. He continued to walk down the hallway, laughing, “roses….damn, maybe I’ll become a florist one day.”
