You'll See
Chapter Twenty-Four
If you haven't noticed, I think I have a flair for the angsty and dramatic... Sorry. :P I was told once that my writing is like a rollercoaster, so I apologize to those who easily suffer from motion sickness.
I'll say once again that this story is writing itself, I just happen to be the vessel it chose to use.
School started again the Monday after New Year’s. I had been tested around people. Carlisle said it was safe for me to return. I was to explain my eyes as contacts, since I couldn’t wear green ones. Vampires have venom everywhere, including eyes, so the contacts would have dissolved and it would seem suspicious if I went to the restroom to change them every few hours.
Jasper had seemed distant since our coupling at New Year’s. I didn’t understand, but I didn’t push either.
I was approached by few people when we returned to school. Mike was one of the few.
“Hey, man, good to see you back,” he said by way of greeting.
“Good to be back,” I replied.
“Did you get contacts?”
“Yeah. I strained my eyesight or something.”
“Tough break. I liked the green.” My brow raised in surprise. “Anyway, how was your Christmas?”
“I didn’t have much of one.”
“Why not? Didn’t you stay with the Cullens?”
“Yeah, but I was helping take care of Jasper. I didn’t really have time for presents…”
“Oh.”
“Plus, Christmas isn’t about the presents.”
“You’re right. Again, it’s good to have you back.” He walked off and I was alone with my thoughts again.
That afternoon, after my final class, the teacher asked to see me about the project she had assigned before school let out for Christmas. She had put me by myself when Edward told her I would do fine. She just wanted to make sure I didn’t want a partner.
After assuring her I was fine working alone, I finally made my way to my locker. The halls were empty of everyone…except Mike.
“Hi, Mike,” I said as I put my unneeded books in my locker.
“Hi,” he said quietly.
“What do you need?”
“I just wanted to talk for a minute.” I closed my locker and turned towards him.
“What about?” Before I knew it, his lips were on mine, a flame to my cold skin.
I shoved him away with more force than was necessary. He hit the floor with an oomph.
“What do you think you’re doing?” I asked harshly, subtly wiping my mouth.
“I was kissing you.”
“I’m sorry, Mike, but I’m taken.”
“Jasper has been distant all day. I thought you had broken up…”
“No. And I’m not interested in you, anyway, Mike. I’m sorry.” I turned and had to restrain myself from running from the building.
I was almost to Jasper’s car when someone grabbed the collar of my shirt and spun me around, causing me to drop my backpack.
Edward had his fist wrapped in the front of my shirt, anger in his eyes.
“Why did you do that to Jasper?” he demanded.
“Do what?”
“He saw you kissing Newton.”
“No, you’ve got it wrong—”
“I thought you loved Jasper.”
“I do, but—”
“Then why in the hell did you kiss Newton?”
“Would you let me explain?” He remained silent. “I had to talk to my teacher. Mike was-”
“Mike, is it?”
“That’s his name. Forgive me for forgetting his last name. I have enough trouble remembering one.”
“It’s Newton.”
“Whatever. He was waiting for me and he kissed me. I shoved him off, told him I wasn’t interested, and now I’m here with you in my face.”
“I’m sure that’s what happened.”
“It is. Now, let me go.” He was still glaring at me.
“Listen here, Whitaker. If you do anything to hurt Jasper like Alice did, I swear…”
“You’ll do what? Kill me?” I snorted and pulled his hand off me.
“You won’t hurt him.”
“You’re right; I won’t.” I lowered my voice. “You forget, Edward, that he’s mine. So step off. You have Bella. Do you see me getting defensive of her?” He growled and tackled me.
“Leave her out of this.”
“Fight!” someone yelled.
“Gladly,” I murmured, easily flipping Edward and pinning him. I had his arms crossed over his chest and my knee at his groin. “I’m still stronger than you.” I tightened my hold on his wrists. “I don’t know why you’re being like this, but I swear… I would never hurt Jasper. I’m his until he doesn’t want me.” I released Edward and stood, holding out my hand to help him up. “I won’t fight you.”
He looked from my face to my hand and back. Slowly, he took my hand and stood.
With a conciliatory nod, I turned to find Jasper’s car pulling out onto the road. I sighed and began the walk home.
o.O Edward is acting weird... Could it be something more than brotherly love? What do you think?
Gaps of Misery--Yay! I was worried that it might have sounded weird or seemed forced or something like that... Anyway, I really think "The Jellyfish of Doom Show" would be #1 most-watched on YouTube! We'd be awesome!
Zynda--I hope you don't have the munchies... That'd be kinda my fault. I didn't spike the brownies, I swear! -lol- I like submissive Jasper, too. In the books, he's always stoic and composed for everyone else. I just think he needs someone he can give up control to. -nod- Yep, and I must say your recent reviews have brightened my day. Bad mood and whatnot, one look at your reviews and I can't help but laugh! And, I haven't thought about it, but yeah, you could say he's buried treasure... -snort- It's just too funny! By the way, I'm glad you like the ending of "Music", though it's not quite finished. Remember that smuttake I'm trying to write? ;)
Kiki--Thank you! I probably shouldn't, but I worry that it's...just not quite right...ya know?
