Chapter 25: CPOV

Teddy and I were taking a stroll by the water behind our house. I held onto his hand for dear life, as he toddled along next to me.

“Spash!”

“No, no, Ted, not today. The water’s too cold.” He tugged on my hand, wanting to run into the water.

I scooped him up and tossed him in the air. He started giggling, instantly forgetting about wanting to go in the water.

I kissed him and tossed him up again. “1, 2… 3!” Up he flew, squealing with delight.

I saw Ana walking down from the house towards us. She was chatting away on her Blackberry.

“Mama!” Teddy called when he saw her from afar.

“Mommy’s coming I think. Here she comes.”

“… you guys found out today?” Ana came closer. “Oh my god, well tell me for crying out loud! Kate, tell me!!” Ana squealed into the phone. “A girl?! Oh, Kate!”

So, Kate and Elliot were having a girl. That would be a sight, my brother holding a little pink bundle. I stifled a laugh, but inside I was feeling something else… something like… a pang of jealousy.

“Is Elliot excited?” Ana continued. “Oh, wow, I’m so happy for you guys.” Ana’s face fell a bit. “Oh, well, you know, we’re just taking our time. We figure it’ll happen when it’s supposed to happen.” Ana became distracted, looking over at Teddy and me by the water. “Yeah, two girls would be cute. Listen, Kate, I have to go- Teddy’s calling for me.”

Teddy had his arms out for his mother, who was just a few feet away now.

“Yes, call me tomorrow. Congratulations, Kate.” Ana hung up the phone and stuck it in her pocket. “Come here, little one.” She took Ted from my arms.

“Mama!” he finally squealed happily on her hip.

I took my wife’s hand, and we continued our stroll.

“So, um, Kate had some news?” I asked sheepishly. Ana had sounded happy while on the phone, but I didn’t know how she was really feeling just yet.

“Yes, they had a doctor’s appointment and found out the gender. They’re having a girl.” Ana was calm as she spoke.

“Wow, my bet was on a boy.” I tried to make light of it. “So, that’ll be funny, seeing my brother with a little girl, huh? I bet he won’t know what to do with her.”

Ana glanced up at me. “Yeah, that’ll be funny.”

Teddy was getting heavy for her as we strolled, so I took him from my wife and put him up high on my shoulders, hanging onto his ankles with my hands.

“Careful, Christian!” Ana warned.

I could hear Teddy squealing happily, banging on my head like a drum.

“Do you want our next baby to be a boy or a girl, Christian?” I was surprised that Ana wanted to keep talking about this.

“Just happy and healthy, love.”

“No, I know, but just be honest. I want to know.”

“Okay, well, I think I’d like to have a daughter.” I sucked in a breath and glanced over at Ana to see her reaction.

A huge smile spread across her face. “Me, too! I didn’t know if you were ready for that yet.”

“I know last time I was really hesitant about having a girl, but this time I think I might be ready.”

“I know you are, baby. Our daughter would be spoiled rotten.”

“Very true, Mrs. Grey. It would be really sweet to see Teddy with a little sister.”

“And Kate’s little girl with a little playmate cousin!”

“Yes, that, too, but if it’s a boy I’ll be just as excited.” I didn’t want our future as-yet-unconceived son to feel unwanted.

“I know, me too.”

I pulled Ted off my shoulders and onto my hip as we walked back to the house.

“I’m proud of you, Ana. I thought after hearing Kate’s news, it might be hard for you, but you’re amazing. So strong.”

“Thanks, Christian. I feel a lot better now that we’re not trying so hard, not talking about it constantly, not taking a test everyday. I can breathe again. What will be will be.”

“Couldn’t have said it any better myself.” I pecked her lips and opened the back door to our kitchen.

We went inside and sat down for lunch.
