The Mistake

Summary

Anita and Jason make a mistake. There's sex but if you can read the books this is much of the same.

Disclaimer: I do not own the Anita Blake series, nor any of the characters from it. I do not make any money from the writing of this story.

Chapter 3

Warning: Um same as before. R for language. That’s it. Unless you count slight OOCness. Because Anita at least is less herself here. (Mostly in what she says not what she does.) If you don’t like that sort of thing then tah! J

The older cop must have been sensitive because when I felt Jason's power he whipped around pointing his gun at him. His partner followed suit.

I eased past them and got in their line of fire just as the older cop ordered Jason to freeze.

"It's okay guys this is Jason."

"He's a fucking werewolf!"

"Yes he is. Now put your guns up, he's harmless. Aren't you Jason?" My eyes held a wealth of meaning. I needed him to calm down and relax. I held up the bag. "I was just coming back out. Go back out to the car Jason."

That was said firmly and my expression left little doubt that he was to obey. Instead he snarled. Uh okay. He looked all right. A little drunk but that wasn't a big surprise since he was. He moved to the side so he was back in the line of fire and growled softly. It seemed to fill the silent store, bounce back and hit us again. This was so not good. Why me!

"Jason!" He looked at me. "I know this is not because of the moon so knock it off." He took a step toward me and I watched as he fought his beast. He was slowly losing the battle. He had an instant when his face showed pure panic.

I slowly put the bag down on the ground and pulled out my gun. Pointing it at Jason's chest I took a deep breath. I really didn't want to shoot him over something as stupid as this. I tried speaking slowly and softly.

"Jason please don't do this. I'm Alpha to you. You know that. And if you do this, your Ulfric will have to be told. You didn't want him to know about tonight so don’t make me tell him. Plus you could go to jail for this. That’s just stupid. Trust me you don't want that to happen. And you know that I'll shoot you if I have to. Don’t make me do it. You may live from their bullets but not mine. Please calm down and go outside and we can talk this over later."

I breathed a sigh of relief as realization crept into his face and his eyes went back to normal. He shook his head and started to cry. "I'm sorry Anita. I didn't mean it, I swear. I saw those cops come in and I panicked. I knew you had your gun." He shuddered. "I only wanted to protect my Lupa."

Ouch. And here I was all ready to shoot him. I put away my gun and moved over to him and gave him a hug, which he heartily returned. I kissed his cheek. "Go wait in the car Jason, I'll be out in a minute okay?"

He nodded and turned to leave. I talked calmly over my shoulder hoping to put the cops at ease. "Sorry guys, he's a little drunk is all. It's harder for him to hold onto himself when his emotions, especially strong ones, come to the fore."

Neither cop relaxed keeping their guns trained on Jason’s back until he was out the door and around the corner of the building where they couldn’t see him anymore.

When Jason had gone far enough outside that I couldn’t see him I counted to ten and turned around to smile weakly at the cops. "Like I said…he's a little drunk."

I picked up the bag. "I'm sorry you had to be called down here for no reason."

"Who's the beer for?" The younger one wasn't just going to let it go. Damn.

"Jason."

“Is that the fucking wolf that just came in here?” The older cop sounded like he had a grudge against werewolves. Though how he knew Jason was one was beyond me. More then likely just a really lucky guess. Werewolves are the most commonly known lycanthrope around.

“Yes. Though how that’s any of your business I’m not sure. Are you charging me with anything?”

"If it’s for him why are you buying it then?" The younger cop ignored my question and continued in the same vein relentlessly.

"Because if you noticed how long it took for him to get in here it would have taken him even longer to get what he wanted and leave. I have be thi things to do then wait in my car for a few hours while he tries to pick out money from his pocket and give it to the clerk."

"How old is he?" Suspicious bastard isn't he? So far the older cop hadn't said anything. Still dealing with Jason's power play I guess.

"He's twenty-one. If he was underage I can assure you I wouldn't be buying him anything except punishment."

"You sure as hell aren't his mother and you don't look like his sister. You his girlfriend?"

Now while that was a nice thing to say in theory I didn't take it as a compliment. What do I look like here? A cradle-robber? Well okay he wasn't that young but still.

"No. Not that it's any of your damn business. May I go now?"

"One more question. Who are you to punish him?"

Fucking nosy bastard wasn’t he. And he certainly listened well. Not many people would have thought I meant real punishment. And from the look he was giving me he’d clearly heard all the things I’d said to calm Jason down, noticing they weren’t things normal people mentioned.

"I never said I would punish him. But if you must know I'm his Lupa. He said it. You heard him. I wouldn't be doing the punishing, the pack leader would. I'd just have to sit back and let him get in trouble." I figured that was enough information to shut him up without really telling him anything more then he probably already knew.

He nodded and nudged his partner to make sure he was okay. I waved bye to everyone and walked out to my car. I put the bag in the trunk and got in.
