Chapter Thirty-Four

Well, I have nothing to say. Not really. So, here's the next chapter. :)

Prom couldn’t come fast enough. By that Saturday, I was nervous as all get out. Jasper was at the Cullen house getting ready. We wouldn’t see each other until I picked him up. He let me borrow his car since I didn’t have one, and I insisted on driving because I had been the one to ask.

The evening was relatively dry for Forks; it wasn’t raining, though it had the day before. I went to pick Jasper up around six. We didn’t eat and we had hunted the night before, so all was good.

I nervously knocked on the door when I arrived, subconsciously straightening my jacket and my white and gold rose boutonniere. It wasn’t alive, so it would last. I had wanted to pick up Jasper’s and bring it, but he refused. He said it would ruin the surprise of his “look.”

Esme opened the door and immediately hugged me.

“Don’t be so nervous,” she whispered in my ear. I nodded my thanks and managed a small smile. “He’s waiting for you.”

I followed her to the living room, but froze in the doorway. Jasper turned to me and smiled. He looked stunning in his white tuxedo. In perfect contrast was the dark green vest and bowtie. I had to lean against the doorframe as I took him in. His usually wild, curly hair had been tamed into gentle blonde waves. His smile was bright and his eyes were soft. He even had on white dress shoes.

I looked down at my own slightly scuffed black ones. I ran my hand through my hair in embarrassment, then caught myself as I messed up my carefully styled hair.
“Dang it,” I muttered, trying to make it lay flat.

Jasper chuckled and rescued me by gently fixing my hair so it at least didn’t stand up everywhere.

“Thanks,” I murmured.

“Anytime. Do you want to help me with my boutonniere?” He motioned towards the coffee table.

I picked up the dark green carnation and carefully pinned it to Jasper’s lapel.

“Picture time!” Esme called. “You both need to have a physical memory of this.” She appeared with a digital camera.

She posed us a few dozen times, snapped at least a hundred different pictures, and finally let us go. Smiling, I graciously led Jasper to the car and opened his door. He chuckled at my chivalry, but slid through the open door anyway.

When I pulled out onto the road, he took my hand in his and kissed my knuckles gently. I smiled and continued the drive to Forks High.

“Why do I have to be the girl?” Jasper pouted when I held out my arm for Senior leadout.

“Someone has to,” I replied. “Besides, I asked you.”

He rolled his eyes. “You keep saying that, like it gives you some power over me,” he complained, but he still hooked his arm through mine.

“All right everyone,” our prom director ordered. “When your name is called, walk to the center of the stage, pause for pictures, then walk off the stage to stand along the wall. Everybody got it?” We all nodded. “Good. And don’t forget to smile!”

There was laughter from a few as their dates put on big, fake smiles.

The DJ stuttered over mine and Jasper’s names, obviously in surprise. We just silently laughed to ourselves as we stepped out of the next couple’s way. Jasper untangled his arm from mine and wrapped it around my waist.

“Will you dance with me during the first song?” he whispered in my ear.

“Nah, I think I’ll just sit here and drink punch while I watch everyone else dance,” I replied sarcastically. He turned surprised and disappointed eyes to the other Seniors walking out. I smacked his chest with the back of my hand.

“What was that for?”

“Duh! Of course I’ll dance with you. And why would I even drink punch?”

“Oh.”

“Didn’t you know I was being sarcastic?”

“…No.”

“Yes, I want to dance. Especially if it’s a slow song.”

He smiled and tightened his grip on my waist as we waited for the leadout to end.

The very first song was, in fact, a slow one. It was “Bless the Broken Road” by Rascal Flatts.

I smiled as Jasper extended his hand and led me to the middle of the dance floor. He placed his hands on my waist and I wrapped my arms around his neck, effectively pulling us close together. Most of the other couples were doing the same, but I paid them little attention.

Jasper rested his forehead against mine as we gently swayed to the music.

“Listen to the lyrics,” he whispered. He began to sing softly; I sighed and listened to his beautiful voice.

I set out on a narrow way many years ago
Hoping I would find true love along the broken road
But I got lost a time or two
Wiped my brow and kept pushing through
I couldn't see how every sign pointed straight to you

Every long lost dream led me to where you are
Others who broke my heart they were like Northern stars
Pointing me on my way into your loving arms
This much I know is true
That God blessed the broken road
That led me straight to you

I think about the years I spent just passing through
I'd like to have the time I lost and give it back to you
But you just smile and take my hand
You've been there you understand
It's all part of a grander plan that is coming true

Every long lost dream led me to where you are
Others who broke my heart they were like Northern stars
Pointing me on my way into your loving arms
This much I know is true
That God blessed the broken road
That led me straight to you

Now I'm just rolling home
Into my lover's arms
This much I know is true
That God blessed the broken road
That led me straight to you

That God blessed the broken road
That led me straight to you.

He kissed my forehead when the next song began. It was one of the faster rap songs that had the couples gyrating together.

I pulled away and sat down.

“Don’t you want to dance?” Jasper asked.

“I don’t know how to dance to these,” I replied.

“I can teach you.”

“I’m afraid I might get too…excited if I try.”

“But that’s the fun part.”

“Maybe later.”

He nodded and sat beside me, setting his arm across my shoulders.

“I’ll hold you to that,” he murmured.

“Hey guys!” Bella called. I looked up at her as she made her way to us, dragging a slightly miffed Edward with her.

“Hello, Bella,” I responded.

“I wish they’d play different music.”

“Yeah. I don’t know how to dance to this.”

“But I’m still teaching you,” Jasper interjected. His hand gently rubbed my arm. I only nodded.

“I’m going to get punch,” Bella announced suddenly. Edward jumped up behind her with a hand at her waist, eager to get away from us, and led her to the food table.

There was another slow song a few songs later. Jasper pulled me from my chair and led me back to the dance floor.

We danced as we had before, though Jasper placed his cheek against mine this time.

“What are we going to do after this?” he asked.

“After prom? I don’t know.”

“You know what a lot of people do after prom?”

“What?”

“It’s the night when the most lose their virginity.”

“Too late for that.”

“Yes, but I’m more interested in the act that leads to the loss,” he breathed in my ear.

I shivered. “I knew it.”

“Knew what?”

“You just want me for my body and all the dirty things you can do to it,” I joked.

He kissed my temple and pressed his forehead to mine, causing me to meet his gaze. “I want you for so much more than that, though it is a plus.” He kissed the tip of my nose. “I want you for your heart. You help people and think about them. I’ve never seen you hurt anyone. Even when Edward tried to pick a fight, you refused.”

“I don’t like fighting.”

“You’ve helped me so much. I don’t know how to thank you.”

“You thank me every time you choose to be with me. That’s more than enough.”

“Then, I will be thanking you for every day of my life.”

“Life?” He always called it an existence.

“You give me life and showed me how to live.”

“You’ve helped me, too, you know. If not for you, I would have never faced my past and, at least partially, let it go.” I pressed my lips against his in a chaste kiss. “I love you, treasure.” His happiness rushed over me. I smiled goofily at him, though everyone else remained the same.

“My Whitaker.” His lips claimed mine again, though this kiss was far from chaste.

Yeah, I snuck a song in there. I couldn't help it. It fits, doesn't it?
Anyway, let me know what you think!
