Chapter 3: The mystery of her thoughts
Edward was waiting for Carlisle in the parlour lightly tapping the piano keys. Carlisle walked in and sat on the piano bench beside him. They just sat there for a few minutes neither saying anything. Edward knowing that Carlisles thoughts were centred only on Esme decided that he would listen to Esmes thoughts. He would get a better sense of how she was adjusting to all of this if he could listen in on her when she wasn’t worried about him hearing. Having spent the last three days listening to her thoughts gave Edward a firm understanding of how she came to be at the bottom of the cliff. Carlisle had not left her side at all so Edward had been unable to tell Carlisle about the loss of her child and her escape from her abusive husband. The pain of her current thoughts only convinced Edward that he had been right about her change. It had been wrong.
“You should not have changed her” Edward said in a voice so low that he knew only Carlisle would hear him. He could not escape the pain of Esmes thoughts and he wondered if she would ever recover from her loss.
So you have said repeatedly. I could not just let her die Edward. I had to save her.
“Well you should not have. She jumped off a cliff to end her life not to extend it into eternity what made you feel that you had no other choice but to change her?” Edward said continuing to keep his voice out of Esmes hearing range.
I did not know that she had tried to end her life at the time Edward. I had no more knowledge as to what happened to her than you did when I brought her here. As to why I don’t fully understand myself. I could not bare the thought of her dying and taking her goodness out of this world. It was like there was a part of me that could not ever let that happen. I know you do not understand but neither do I.
“She should have been left to the fate she chose. She is grieving and she….”
Edward I meant what I said about keeping Esmes thoughts to yourself. If she wishes to tell me what caused her to want to end her own life then she will. These things are not your secrets to tell. I have told you before that the thoughts of those around you are private. You should respect that privacy. You should not be repeating what goes on inside peoples heads.
“Carlisle I think you should know what she is going through. How else will you be able to help her?”
Edward my son. It will help her more if she comes to me on her own with her grief than if she knows that you have told me of it. I know that it is hard for you to hear the turmoil in the thoughts of those around you but we will do Esme more good if we let her come to terms with all of this on her own without your help. I know that your heart is in the right place and appreciate that you care enough to try and help.
“Alright Carlisle. But I will tell you to be careful with her for now. She is very upset.”
I will be. Will you come hunt with us?
“No I think it will be better for Esme if just you go my talent makes her nervous. You should go upstairs now she just noticed the colour of her eyes” Edward said looking down at the piano keys. With that Carlisle took off upstairs to console Esme and to explain to her why her eyes were now a vivid crimson.
