Love to Hate You, Hate to Love You

Jasper POV

Edward decided to come back, after all. I know I should be happy about this, but I can't help but worry. Edward apparently decided that he could, in fact, control himself. Like he said to me, "Who is this insignificant girl to stop him from coming back?" He could handle it. Well, he better be right.

Edward has only been back for a week or so, and he is being nice to Bella. Nice but while keeping a healthy distance. He wants to make up for his rude behavior towards he and I think he is curious. She was the first person he had come across that he couldn't read her mind. I know that must be some sort of relief, similar to how refreshing it was that I didn't yearn for her blood. I had chosen not to tell any of my family about that fact. I tried very hard not to think or talk about Bella until I fully reign in this weird feeling I have towards her. I'm sure it will go away eventually. I love Alice and no one else. She is good to me and she needs me. She said she is keeping tabs on Edward in Biology, so we will know right away if he was going to slip up, but things seem to be under control.

The warning bell rings to signal the start of yet another tedious day. I can't wait to graduate...again. High school really is starting to grate on my nerves, especially lately. I tried to avoid seeing Bella in the halls, and the few times we have met I am distant and cold. I know she is hurt and confused at my change toward her, but that is the way it has to be. It's better for both of us. I turn to grab Alice's hand and make our way inside when I see her face go blank and she is gone into a vision.

"Alice? What do you see?"

"No..." is all she manages to get out. Then Edward pushes me aside and runs further into the parking lot. Then I see it, a blue van has hit a patch of ice and is sliding dangerously across the parking lot. I look further down its destined path and its aiming...straight at Bella. NO! Not her! I let out a low growl and try to let go of Alice's hand to run towards Bella. To save her, but Alice is scared and has my hand in her iron grip. Edward, thank god, has made it to Bella in time and shoves the van out of the way. I am anxious to know if Bella is ok, but I don't want to bring any more attention to the accident. Edward ran over there at a vampire's pace and everyone will be confused as to how the van has a huge dent in its side. I don't care though, I am just relieved she is safe. Rosalie is furious but we will all have to wait until we get home tonight to talk about this as a family.

***Later, at the Cullen house***

"Edward, what the fuck were you thinking?! You have exposed us all, how could you be so selfish?!" Rosalie was nearly in hysterics.

"You're right, Rose. I risked exposure to save someone's life. I am a completely selfish creature."

"Well, she knows somethings off. You pushed a van off of her for crying out loud. What do you plan on doing about it."

"I don't think she will say anything to anyone." Alice, who had been quiet until now, chimed in.

"Well, she better not. The first second I think she is going to reveal our secret, I.." With the statement, Edward and I both let out a growl.

Edward looks concerned at my growl, which worries me, but then says "She won't, Jasper. You have my word and Alice has seen that she won't. No on is going to harm this girl."

Harm her? Is that what he thought I wanted when that is what I have wanted to protect her from all along, even if that meant fighting my brother or him staying far away from Forks? I would never hurt Bella Swan, not like he could. Everyone started to argue about what would be the best course to take when Alice says,

"That's not all I have seen." Everyone went silent. "Don't you see what is going on, Edward?" He just looked at her for a moment when I realized she was sharing a vision with him. For once, I echoed Emmett's annoyance with their silent conversations.

"No. It can't be...How? That doesn't make any sense." Edward said, looking paler if that was possible. He was scared.

"Love rarely makes sense, Edward." Alice says, in a matter of fact manner.

Love? Did she just say LOVE?!

Esme, the mother of our little group of misfit vampires, was suddenly filled with joy.

"Edward, fall in love with this girl? This human girl?" Esme asked, a big smile on her pretty face.

"Yes. And she will be one of us someday."

My lifeless heart was breaking. Why didn't I see this coming? I should have been able to, easily, and I do not even have Alice's gift. The way he looked at her, what I wrote off as just being curious. Did I not look at her the same way? It wasn't curiosity, it was longing. I knew she was attracted to Edward, so there would be nothing in his way. This really must be the end of it. She was to be my brother's mate. I had to drive her out of my mind and heart for good. I just don't know if I can. I don't trust Edward. How can you love someone whose blood sings to you? It's like falling in love with a Big Mac. I may have to keep a distance emotionally, but I will be right beside them making sure he will never ever harm her. That the choice to turn will be hers, not the result of a slip in Edward's diet.
