Chapter Forty-Six
Guys, I am SO sorry it has taken me so long! There's just been a whole lot of crap going on in RL. I'm still not happy with this chapter, :/ but I decided to go ahead and post it. I'm also sorry that it's short.
If you have any suggestions to how I could improve it, let me know. :) Be harsh, please, if it's needed.
Carlisle called us about a week later, saying Richard’s wounds had healed, but he was still under light sedation so he would remain calm.
Through my urging, Jasper and I hurried over. We had discussed what to do about Richard. We were going to convince him to turn himself in to the authorities for his theft. It was all over the news, how he had stolen the ankh and how stumped the authorities were as to his location. And, if he refused to cooperate, we could always turn him in ourselves.
The problem would be if he started talking about vampires. Most would write him off as mental, but there would be one or two or more who would believe him. That’s what worried us most. When people believed something and were scared of it, they tended to react harshly.
“Why are you keeping me here?” Richard slurred through the light sedatives, trying to glare at us.
“We want to convince you to do the right thing,” I stated.
“I can’t. The ankh is broken, so I can’t kill you.”
“And who says killing us is the right thing? There are far more dangerous vampires than we vegetarians.”
He scoffed. “Any walking vampire is a dangerous one.”
“Then we’ll stand still.”
He glared. “This is no time for jokes.”
“I’m being serious.”
No reply.
“Why do you hate us so much?”
“That’s rather obvious—”
“No, us,” I motioned towards Jasper and myself.
“Again—”
“No.” He fell silent. “Jasper spared your life.”
“At the extent of my family!”
“If you want to die, that can be arranged,” Jasper murmured. I glanced back at him. “What? It can.”
“But we’re not going to,” I replied.
“What, too afraid to kill me?” Richard snorted. “That’s a laugh.”
“Not afraid. Just taking the high road. Though, if you want to see how unafraid I am, I’d be willing to show you. You could have killed my mate.” I raised my hand as if to backhand him, and he flinched, closing his eyes in expectation. I lowered my hand, ashamed at the satisfaction I felt in scaring him. “I won’t hit you,” I muttered, watching as Richard peeked up at me, “because I choose to do what is right.”
“And what would that be?”
“You stole a rare artifact. We’re going to turn you in.”
For once in the short time I’d known him, Richard remained silent. Then, he nodded.
“Why do you capitulate so readily?” Jasper asked.
“It’s the right thing,” Richard replied, shrugging. The sedatives had worn off and there was a gleam in his eye that I didn’t like.
“Will you turn yourself in?” I questioned.
“If you’ll take me to the station.”
I grabbed the ankh, Jasper grabbed his keys, and we both led Richard out to the car.
Jasper drove while I sat in the back with Richard.
As soon as we stopped in front of the police station, I jumped out of the car and pulled Richard with me.
He meekly followed me into the building, clutching the ankh tightly in his hands.
“Hello, Whitaker. What are you doing here?” Charlie greeted me.
“Afternoon, Charlie. I brought someone you might like to see,” I replied, stepping out of the way. There was a collective gasp around the room (which consisted of about three other people) when they caught sight of Richard.
“I came to turn myself in,” he mumbled, passing the broken ankh to Charlie.
“How did you—” Charlie tried.
“We found him in the woods. He was rambling something about vampires, and thought Jasper and I were ones!” I scoffed.
Richard glared at me. I knew that had been his plan, to make those claims. And I just foiled it!
“Judy, would you cuff him while I call this in?” Charlie addressed the only female officer in the room. She nodded and stepped forward with a pair of handcuffs.
Richard didn’t resist, though he continued to glare at me. “You’ll pay for this!”
“Yeah, ok,” I said sarcastically.
He made no reply as he was taken to one of the few cells Forks Police Department had.
“You know there is a reward, right?” Charlie asked.
“I don’t want it. Give it to the museum or something for compensation.”
He nodded. “They’ll come down for a psych evaluation sometime over the next few days, then take him wherever they decide he needs to go.”
“Well, that’s all we can ask for.”
“I’ll let you know how it goes, though I’m sure it will be all over the news.”
“Can I ask a favor?”
“Sure.”
“Don’t say we brought him in.”
He looked confused. “Why not?”
“Just don’t want the publicity.”
“All right. If you insist.”
“I do.” I smiled and left the station, suddenly feeling lighter.
Jasper smiled and took my hand when I slid into the front passenger seat. I smiled back, happy that we didn’t have Richard to deal with anymore. He was in Charlie’s hands now, and I wasn’t going to worry about it. I hoped his presence wouldn’t mar Jasper’s clearing. I wanted to remember the beauty the sunlight provided, the feel of the breeze as we had lain in the grass, the smell of the flowers…
The flowers. I had never seen Jasper take care of them, not that I remembered. In fact, he never seemed to take notice of them at all.
“Hey, Jasper, I have a question,” I began.
“Okay…” He was a bit confused by my preamble.
“When do you take care of the garden?”
“What garden?”
“The flower garden in your clearing.”
“Um…Whitaker… There aren’t any flowers in the clearing.”
“Huh? Yeah, there are. I saw them. I smelled them.”
He cast a worried glance my way. “Let’s just go see instead of arguing it out.”
I nodded in acquiescence.
I told you the flowers would have a play later on. :)
One more chapter after this! I've got part of it done, so it shouldn't be a really long time this time 'round... It's been a long run, but a good one, right? :( I can't believe this is almost over...
Let me know what you think. :)
VindictiveDiva--I can't fault you for being busy. I'm in the same boat. :)
elvinwitch--Well, I like to keep characters together... But this one ends differently than Music. Oh, and I've started the sequel to Music, btw. But don't tell anyone. ;) j/k It's not ready to post yet.
DBZchick--I can't wait to read it! And I wasn't that cruel...
Song of Time--Well, you wrote one long paragraph... :)
