Snow White and Rose Red

Part One: Queen and Bear

Once upon a time there was a beautiful forest, and in this forest was a cottage. While its location was not isolated from the rest of the world, it was just far away enough to let the occupants felt safe. Inside this beautiful cottage there lived three people; Snow White, Rose Red and their friend, Felicia. Now, it may surprise you to know that Snow White and Rose Red were drag queens, and every so often they would go down to the local village to perform for the many people. Their dancing and singing was most entertaining to any man or woman who saw them and even town visitors stopped to admire their talents.

During the summer months, Rose Red would work in the house, keeping it neat and tidy while Snow White prepared the clothes they wore to their performances. Always fixing a rip here, a split seam there, or improving the detail to make the outfit more stunning. Felicia would ask them to do some things around the house for her, as she was blind and could not see very well. In the winter months when they were not called to town to entertain, they spent nights by the fire and talked, spun yarn or told stories to each other. Each friend was very close to the other two, and there was never an argument, a foul word said and never a voice raised. And outside of their occupations, Snow White and Rose Red were rather enchanting gentlemen. They enjoyed going into the forest to collect flowers, fruit or firewood if needs be. Sometimes they would take too long upon their path and would find themselves in the forest in the dark. They would curl up together on the ground under a tree and sleep in each other’s arms. Felicia never worried for a moment; for she knew no harm would befall them. Nature protected them and their enchanting touch would never lead them wrong.

One day, Felicia asked for her friends to go and pick some fruit in the dying autumn forest and to bring it back and she would make a pie. The two gentlemen set out into the forest. While they were there, nature seemed to pull into them to say farewell for the winter. The rabbit came and was patted on the head, the Doe came and grazed near them, birds sang and a Stag bounded past, giving them a look of courage and bravery. When the young men returned, they settled in for the night, knowing that most of their shows in the village were over until the warmer weather came. The pie was cooked and tasted delicious. They came together around the fire. Snow White with a dress to alter, Rose Red spinning the yarn and Felicia told them a story.

When winter rolled in, Snow White and Rose Red both turned 23. They found many ways to celebrate the event. They practiced their singing for Felicia, made a new dress with material purchased from their earnings and had a wonderful feast. On the same night, the heavy snows fell. As they gathered around the fire for their usual evening, there came a knock at the door. Rose Red stood up from the spinning wheel and went over to the door. Removing the bolt and opening the door, he was greeted by the sight of a giant black bear. He nearly screamed and fainted. Snow White took a poker from near the fire and held it like a weapon, but the bear merely laughed.

'Fear me not, for I seek shelter. I have lost my home in the sudden storm and I cannot find my way. I happened upon your home and hoped you would protect me.' Snow White and Rose Red calmed down and came to greet the bear. They put him in front of the fire and beat the snow out of his fur. The bear looked at them with a big smile.

So the evening progressed. Snow White covered the bear with a quilt, Rose Red found some left over fish and Felicia told a story to them. As dawn arrived, the bear rose and went to leave. 'I shall return tonight when the snow sets in and the winter dares to blow so cold.' he smiled and left. That night, as per his word, he returned to their cottage and was invited in. And so it went on. The bear came every night, and Snow White and Rose Red would talk with him while he sat in front of the fire, or else play tricks and games on the bear.

'Oh please stop for the life of me.' the bear would say. 'Snow White and Rose Red, do not beat your lover dead.' The two men ignored this and continued to play, but a little more gently.

Eventually, spring came and the two men were called to perform in the village. On the same morning, the bear bid them farewell.

'Shall we not see you again?' asked Rose Red.

'You will be awfully missed.' said Snow White.

'Alas I must.' the bear answered. 'I must now find the one who holds my treasure and get it back.' said the bear. As he was leaving, his fur caught on the handle of the door and some came off. It was too quick to be sure, but it looked like there was clothing under the bear’s fur.

As the day progressed, Snow White and Rose Red went to the village and performed, both talking on how much they missed their friend, the bear.

'I do wish he could have stayed with us.' said Snow White.

'Indeed, but he has things to do and we mustn't hold him against his will.' Rose Red answered. Snow White nodded in agreement and adjusted his dress. Rose Red passed a scarf to him and he put it on.

'That is much more becoming.' Snow White gushed.

'Even the bear agreed with it.' Rose Red complimented.

'So I recall. What a gentleman he would have been if he were born a man.' Snow White thought aloud. As they continued on their way, a figure appeared in front of them. It was another drag queen like them. He held out a hand in a gesture to stop. As Snow White and Rose Red did as they were told, the other Drag Queen disappeared. A moment later, a giant bolder rolled across the path from the hillside. If the two had kept going, they surely would have been killed. Hugging each other and thanking the mysterious Queen, they continued on their way. When they returned home, Felicia had a surprise for them. Outside the door were two rose bushes. One was white and one was red.

'Oh, they are pretty.' Said Snow White.

'Indeed, I could not envision a sight more beautiful for our home.' Rose Red concurred.

'Speaking of envision...' Snow White continued, and they went inside telling Felicia of what had happened on their way to the Village.

'Oh, I wouldn't be surprised you two. You have always been such wonderful men. Never causing arguments, never upsetting people and always polite. I daresay that a spirit in the guise of a Drag Queen like yourselves protected you, for there is something you have to do for him.' Felicia explained.

'Well that is interesting dear.' Snow White said sincerely.

'What could it be that it wants us to do?' Rose Red inquired.

'You will have to wait and see.' Felicia said with a knowing look in their general direction.
