Mercedes POV
I was waiting for James to meet me in our "spot", the little clearing where we first met. I was anxious because, after much deliberation, i had finally descided i was going to tell him how i felt; i was going to tell him i loved him. I just hoped to god and my lucky stars that he felt the same way. I was sitting down near a little pond in the middle of the clearing when i heard rustling behind me. Smiling, i turned around expecting James, however what i saw turned my blood cold. Victoria. There she was, although i hardly recognized her without her teeth bared at me.
We stood there looking at eachother in a sort of trance for what seemed like eternity, but was actually only 5 minutes.
"Where's James", i asked, scared that she might have done something to prevent him from coming here.
"Laurent distracted him so i could come here to have a little..chat..with you", she replied with a sly smirk on her face. 'Oh god', i thought, 'she's going to kill me'.
I must have been backing away from her because before i knew it me feet were just at the edge of the pond and the ends of my jeans were getting soaked.
She smirked at me once more then continued talking.
"So this is what all the hype is about. This is why me and Laurent havn't spent more then 5 minutes with our best friend in the last couple of months. This is why James as been so distracted.", Victoria said in a tone that clearly suggested she wasn't at all happy with the human girl standing before her.
"This is why my best friend has been happier in the last couple of months then he has been in the last couple of centuries", she said her voice suddenly taking on a softer tone. My head immediately shot up at this. 'What?', i thought.
"Yea", she confirmed, almost as if she had read my mind.
"Look", she said in a straight-to-the-point manner, "i'm not here to hurt you..yet, so relax. However, i WILL hurt you if you do ANYTHING to hurt James. And i promise you, if you do descide to make a stupid choice and betray James, there will not be a place on this Earth that you could hide from me or Laurent. Got it?", she finished.
"I care about James...alot", i said after a short pause, "and i would NEVER do anything to hurt him. I know i havn't known him as...long as you have and i know we are literally complete opposites but i promise you, he means everything to me and i would no sooner hurt him then myself. So YOU can relax, he's safe with me.", i said in a firm voice. There was no way in hell i was going to let her or anyone else scare me away from James. However i did understand where Victoria was coming from. She had know James for centuries and was just looking out for her friend and i respected that.
She looked taken back by my boldness, but nodded in acceptance none the less and finally took off in the direction she came.
I found myself releasing a breath i didn't even know i was holding when she finally left. Jesus that was nerve-wracking.
"I'm impressed", said someone behind me. Turning around i was greeted with the sight of another smirking vampire. Only this time it was the one i was expecting.
"Jesus do you vampires have nothing better to do then sneak up on people", i asked James holding my hand to my heart.
He didn't answer. He did however do something completely unexpected.
He walked straight toward me. Placed his hands on either side of my face and kissed me with everything he had. Once the initial shock wore off i responded and wrapped my arms around his waist pulling him closer. It was over almost as fast as it had began. When he pulled away i was still on cloud nine and my eyes were still closed.
"If i didn't know any better, i would say you loved me", he said softly. Finally opening my eyes to his bright blue ones i smiled and said dreamily, "Yea i do. I Love You James."
Something foreign flashed across his eyes and i was scared he wouldn't recipricate. But then he silenced my doubts and replied firmly,
"Well good, because i love you too Mercedes. I always have", he said before planting his lips firmly on mine again. For the first time in my entire life i felt whole. I felt wanted and i felt loved. All the pain i had endured, all the bullshit, it all seemed worth it, because i had James and he had me. 'Thank god i didn't go home early that night', i thought.
