Chapter Four

I wrote enough for two chapters. I could have made it one, but I wanted it to be split up. :)

Edward dropped Bella off at her house before taking me to his. His silver Volvo was quite comfortable, but I still sat on the edge of my seat while I waited to reach our destination.

The Cullen household was quite large and seemed to be made of a lot of glass. I wasn’t very interested in it at the moment, though.

“Hang on just a minute,” Edward said, stepping from his car. “Jasper! Don’t you dare!” he called. I looked around, but didn’t see my curly-headed friend anywhere. Edward stepped a little further from the Volvo, walking toward the side of the house. “He just wants to explain to you what happened. Give him a chance.” He paused, still progressing toward the tree line at the side of the house. “I know you’ve heard it from me, but just listen to him.” He stopped walking. “Jasper, don’t do this. You’ll hate yourself if you don’t hear him out. You can feel when he’s lying, so let that be your guide.” What in the heck is he talking about? “Come on, Jasper. No one can wait forever.” I opened my door and got out of the car when I saw Edward’s hand wave towards me. He chuckled at some unknown joke. “Even we can’t wait forever.” I waited halfway between the Volvo and Edward for any sign of Jasper. Then, I saw something move in the trees.

It was Jasper, making his way toward us slowly. I smiled and approached when he stood in front of Edward.

“Hey, Jasper,” I greeted quietly. He nodded, but didn’t say anything. So he’s back to not talking. This should be easy…not.

“Do you two want to talk out here?” Edward asked.

“It doesn’t matter to me. Wherever Jasper wants to go.” Without a word, Jasper turned back towards the woods, obviously expecting me to follow. I did with no hesitation.

He led me to a small clearing not far from the house. There was a stone bench in the center of it. He sat and indicated I sit next to him.

“I’m really sorry, Jasper, for what happened,” I began. I told him what had happened and why I had said what I did. “I just… I don’t want everyone to know about me.”

“Why do you care what people think?” he spoke for the first time. I sighed; I knew this had been coming.

“It’s not that I care. I just don’t want to be bullied all the time anymore. At the other two schools I’ve been to, when they found out about my…orientation, I was bullied and made fun of incessantly. I was kind of glad to move, even under the conditions I was in.”

“Humans can be so close-minded,” he muttered.

“What?”

“I said, ‘People can be so close-minded.’”

“Yeah, but my parents didn’t seem to mind when I told them. That’s why we moved the first time. They wanted things to be easier on me, but the kids were all the same. We didn’t have the money to move again.” We fell quiet for a time.

“I’m sorry I overreacted.”

“You didn’t overreact. I shouldn’t have said what I did.”

“No, I understand why you did.” I touched his hand.

“Thank you,” I said, lacing our fingers together. His chilled hand didn’t bother me as much as it had the first time our hands had touched.

“For what?”

“For hearing me out. I didn’t think I’d get a chance to apologize.” He nodded, falling silent again. I studied his hand while I held it in mine. There seemed to be faint crescent-shaped marks everywhere on his hand and up his arm. “What are these?” I asked, touching one. He pulled his hand away; I missed the contact.

“Nothing,” he snapped. I sighed and put my own hands back in my lap.

“It’s beautiful out here,” I said as if nothing had just happened.

“It’s my thinking place.”

“I can see why. Very peaceful.” He nodded.

He set his hand on the bench between us. I did the same, and his pinkie finger curled around mine. A small smile lit up both of our faces. No teeth, but still a smile of contentment.

So, a bit of fluffiness developing between them... Whaddya think?
