a Twilight's End
I never believed in silly metaphors and similes until I set my sights upon Sasha. "She hit me like a ton of bricks", would be the one I would use. A pre-Raphaelite redhead holding a lunch tray and glancing nervously around the crowded cafeteria. New girl. Although I didn't speak the words, Edward nodded in agreemen next to me. Bella lifted her head from his shoulder and looked curiously at us. "What is it?," she asked. Rosalie sneered at her from across the table. "If Jasper didn't feel the need to say it aloud, Isabella, it doesn't concern you." Bella glanced at Edward, a trace of bemusement evident in her dark eyes. Edward cleared his throat. "That redheaded girl there, she's new. You can imagine how she must be feeling."
"Awful. Although her problem seems a little different from mine. She doesn't have scores of people coming up to her, trying to be bestest friends." Bella paused, glancing sidelong at Edward. "And she doesn't have the fear that a very handsome vampire is loathing her." The object of her obvious affection laughed. "That would be a poor girl indeed."
Before I could even contemplate my actions, I was standing up and striding over to where the poor girl stood. "Hello. My name is Jasper. What's yours?" I subtly willed her nervousness away. Her expression cleared in an instant, and I was able to focus more on her features than her apprehension. She had almond-shaped emerald eyes, and her red hair fell in loose, wavy curls around her shoulders. I was expecting her scent to overtake me, as Bella's did to Edward, but nothing of the sort happened. It was simply her beauty that drew me to her. I felt slightly shallow in this respect, but as she began to speak this feeling was washed away. Her voice was like music to my ears. "I'm Sasha. I'm new, as you can probably tell."
Back at the table, Rosalie was rigid with anger. "What is he doing?," she hissed, "he's never done anything like this. He's not like some of us." She glared at Edward. "You started this whole...trend." The bronze-haired vampire shrugged innocently. "Jasper is a male who saw a pretty girl. You cannot blame him. It was to happen eventually, especially now that he's more...well-adjusted." As I turned over my shoulder to indicate I could very well hear them, I saw Edward give me a brief wink. He was referring to my self-control as it concerns human blood. I've made a lot of progress thanks to my adopted father, Carlisle. It definitely wasn't Sasha's blood that was tempting me, although her silky red hair made me briefly think of the liquid.
"Are you looking for somewhere to sit?" I glanced toward a table that was empty save for a scrawny freshman boy devouring a sandwich. As I pulled out a chair for Sasha, the boy caught one glimpse of me and quickly vanished from the spot. The younger ones were a bit intimidated by me and my lot, which included Rosalie and Edward, and also Emmet and Alice.
"Thank you," she said. She smiled up at me, her eyes brightening as she did so. I sat next to her, grinning like an idiot. "You're very gentlemanly." I actually had to give myself a dose of my own medicine to keep from blushing. "Oh, well, I try. Not enough young men are these days. Especially in the presence of ladies." Her smile made my temperature rise a few degrees. I was a goner.
