Screw Compromise

This story is based off a 'scene' in the third book, Eclipse. I wouldn't read this if you haven't read it yet. Basically, there was a part in the book that I would have liked to see happen a little different, so I decided to capitalize on that and 're-write' it my way. So some of the lines may be a little similar to the book, because there was only one part I really wanted to change.

To summarize a few things for those who haven't read the books: Bella moved from Arizona to Forks, Washington to live with her dad Charlie, who is a cop. Here she met the Cullens: Alice, Jasper, Rosalie, Emmett, Esme, Carlisle, and last but certainly not least, Edward. Bella falls in love with Edward, but the catch is: they're vampires.

Chapter One: Screw Compromise

In the nightmare, all I could see was black. I ran and ran but never seemed to get anywhere. I saw red eyes glaring at me in my peripheral vision, but when I turned to face them they disappeared. It wasn't the first nightmare, nor was it the first time I woke up in a cold sweat screaming my lungs out.

"EDWARD!" I shouted, sitting bolt upright in bed. I was disoriented for a moment, not recognizing the bed I was sleeping on until Edward wrapped his cold arms around me and pulled me back into a horizontal position. "Shh, love, I'm right here," he whispered into my ear. I shivered, a combination of the quickly dissipating fear from the nightmare and the feel of his tantalisingly cool breath against my cheek. I snuggled against his rock-hard chest and sighed. "I'm sorry .. It was just a stupid nightmare," I mumbled into his chest. He chuckled and said, "You don't have to apologize, Bella. It's not like I was sleeping." I smiled with the irony of this statement.

See, vampires don't sleep at all. Before I started coming around, Edward's room consisted of his records and a black leather couch. For my benefit, he replaced the leather couch with a giant, king sized bed for whenever I got a chance to spend the night. This time around, I had told Charlie I was spending the night with Alice so that I could spend the weekend with the Cullens. Charlie, of course, assumed that I would be sleeping with Alice and that Edward was out of town hunting with his brothers Jasper and Emmett. Thankfully though, I got to spend my weekend nestled in bed with my own little slice of heaven named Edward. He had told me when I arrived that he wanted to spend this weekend trying to forget everything but me and him, just the two of us spending time together alone for once, without Charlie looking over our shoulders or sitting in class surrounded by every high-schooler in Forks.

I eagerly awaited when it would all be over and I could do nothing but spend alone time with Edward. I was ready to join his family and his world as a vampire, but I had to wait until graduation. I had to wait until I could move with Edward to some remote place, so that I could eliminate the chances of endangering everyone I cared about. New born vampires were very strong and bloodthirsty, with not an ounce of self-control. The Cullens led a very different life that they liked to refer to as 'vegetarian', meaning they stayed far away from human blood as much as possible and fed on animals instead. Of course, Edward refused to change me until I agreed to marry him first, counting on my blatant fear of marriage after high school to delay the change. He also refused to do one of the things I wanted most from him.

I tilted my head up to his neck and kissed it, working my way up his jawline to his lips. I could feel him smiling as he returned my kiss enthusiastically, his tongue cold against mine as it swirled around the inside of my mouth. I had to remind myself to breathe, and to control myself as my hands wrapped tightly around the back of his neck. I began to feel optimistic, hoping tonight would be the night that he let go of his reserves and let me get what I wanted.

No such luck: After a searing kiss that was not entirely long enough, he pulled back with a chuckle. "Honestly, Bella. Don't make me break my rules." My face twisted into a scowl as he said this, visibly pouting, which caused him to laugh even more. "It's not fair," I grumbled. "Life's not fair, love," he replied. "Now listen, I got something for you and you have to promise not to complain or argue with me."

He knew I was not a fan of gifts, or anything extravagant. I had even made him swear not to spend any money on me for my birthday or on a graduation present. I looked at him curiously, but before I could even ask if it had cost him anything, he added, "It was handed down to me by my mother, so it's not a big deal and it didn't cost me anything." I smiled slightly, and asked for it as I sat up. Edward turned onto his other side, facing away from me, to grab something from a drawer. I studied his face, pale and beautiful, as he fastened my present to the bracelet on my wrist. His liquid gold eyes smiled up at me, and he leaned forward to place a kiss on my forehead. I looked down at the beautiful crystal heart he'd added to my bracelet; it was cut with a million facets and sparkled every single time I moved. "It's beautiful," I declared, still studying it in the light, watching it twist back and forth and throw rainbows onto my blanket in the moonlight. "Thank you."

He grinned as I lay down again, pulling him on top of me. "And now we need to talk," I said hesitantly. His smile faded a little as he noticed my serious manner. I cleared my throat and continued. "It's nothing bad. I just wanted to talk about this whole marriage deal you have planned." The deal was that after graduation, if Edward and I married in the summer, he would change me into a vampire and the two of us would relocate, preferably to Alaska. He also would pay for my college tuition, when I was ready to go back, and we could also have sex. The latter was something Edward was very firm about on waiting, because his inhuman strength could crush me if he lost control even for one second, and also because he wanted to keep us both virgins until marriage. It was a little harder for me to agree.

"What about the deal?" He asked with a frown. "Just .. I'm afraid that things will change after you change me, and there's something I want to do before I'm not human anymore." My face was red, and I bit my bottom lip. Edward was completely clueless.

He smiled encouragingly and said, "Of course, Bella. Anything you want." I looked away, avoiding his eyes. He looked a little confused now. God, why was he so clueless? Why was this so hard to say? I was hoping he would catch on soon.

"Promise?" I asked, running my hands through his hair and gently stroking the back of his neck. "Yes .. just tell me what you want and you can have it, Bella." He sounded genuinely confused, and I couldn't figure out why I felt this awkward as I whispered, "I want you." I looked back up at him to see a smile across his face. "I'm already yours, Bella." I sighed. He clearly was not getting the message I was trying to send. "I know, but I mean .. like .. in a different way." He still looked oblivious, so I decided to just go for it. Tilting my lips up to meet his, I kissed him again; this time, I had no intention of stopping, or taking no for an answer. I could practically hear the click in his mind as he realized what I wanted. He pulled away. "Bella, no. I could kill you." I tried to keep my voice from being whiny as I said, "But you promised!" He sighed and merely looked at me. "Is this really what you want? Even though you know it's not safe, and that I want to wait?" He asked quietly. I bit my lip, my face turning a bright red. I didn't trust myself to speak, so I simply nodded.

He was quiet for a few more moments, and then leaned down to kiss me again. My tongue parted his mouth urgently now, impatient with desire. He still seemed hesitant as I brought my arms from around his neck to the collar of his shirt. My hands shook as I tried to open the buttons without being too obvious. Edward dropped his lips to my neck, kissing softly up to my ear. I tried to stay quiet and refrain from moaning as he gently nibbled on my earlobe. I managed to get most of the buttons on his shirt undone when he sat up slightly. I could see him smiling now as he slid out of his shirt with ease. "Very well, if this is what you want," he said, almost too quietly for me to hear. I couldn't make out the expression on his face, but the last thing I remember thinking was that I had won the argument and he had finally given in.

A/N: Hahaha :) Sorry, but I do love my evil cliffys. Stay tuned, chapter 2 will be up soon. Feedback is GREATLY appreciated, so feel free to leave some reviews!
